The spreading, or diffusion, of an idea or technology is known as the technology adoption life cycle. In his 1962 book Diffusion of Innovation, sociologist Everett Rogers theorized that people belong to one of five groups based on how and when they adopt new things: Innovators, Early Adopters, Early Majority, Late Majority, and Laggards.
